I bet the reason the nested replies UI is so ugly is they're saving space to add reactions too. That's my conspiracy theory for today. 🧐 I'm onto u tumblr... I see the future......
WAIT actually no what if they added up/downvotes for replies instead. Introducing a ratio effect to a previously ratio-free site. The replies are traditionally the underfunded petting zoo of tumblr after all. Lotta laugh potential there.
Any of these options will still be very ugly though lol
Ha, we'll have to wait and see, but now you have receipts for the future if you're proven right!!
Of those two options, I think reactions are slightly more likely because upvotes/downvotes seem kind of antithetical to how engagement works on this site? But who knows, tumblr does what tumblr does lol
Honestly, though, I'd wager the devs just aren't particularly good at UI work and/or simply don't have the *time* to do UI work (since staff is so tiny these days). The spacing on the new reply panel looks to me like they plopped in the reply button icon, and then maybe spent a total of 5 seconds trying to adjust the padding in the CSS code before giving up lmao. Given this site's propensity for spaghetti code, it's also possible they *tried* to fix it, and had a contradictory style somewhere they couldn't find slfjddsl.
Basically, the layout has a lot of spacing that looks more to me like unnecessary padding rather than space for additional elements. Personally, though, I think tumblr should add exactly one (1) react button, and it should just be the tumbeasts from days of old
#decent chance you *do* see the future though WE'LL SEE#seriously though i'm shocked we've been getting any new features at all given most of tumblr staff was moved to wordpress#be kind to the devs fr#anon#ask

I'M BACK
...but Tumblr is still blocked on residential internet and I don't want to risk getting flagged by the spam filter again for using VPN, so let's hope reporting my ISP to our National Telecommunication Agency does something. At least this blog isn't restricted anymore; thanks for those who interacted with my test posts (you did help) and T&S team for fixing the issue! ✨
I'll be doing artistic and scientific collaborations at Oceanview in the meantime. See ya around. 🍹
#can you believe in my ISP's audacity today to say there's a court order to block tumblr residentially for no reason and only for them#when clearly that's not how things work here in Brazil and sites using the same route (wordpress and nygamecritics) are blocked as well?#they literally came up with this bs just because I made the report but it contradicts their tech support history#they guaranteed me for TWO MONTHS there was no order at all and they couldn't understand why it's blocked :( :( :(#they tried *everything* to help when they could just have sent me the information about this (inexistent) court order in January :( :( :(#I accessed it normally through my neighbour's ISP and I'm using my 4G now. Should I let Alexandre de Moraes know about this? 😔#fr tho calculate with the wrong % as much as you want but preventing me to get my daily dose of emotional support dilfs when I'm grieving#definitely crosses the line lmao

The Almost Lost Relationship of Adonis and Dionysus

[ID: An image of the seats at the Theater of Dionysus in Athens. The sun shines on the pale steps, illuminating them slightly. Beyond the stairs, there is nothing else in the theatre and it acts as an empty scene.]
wordpress link
ADONIS IS KNOWN FOR BEING CAUGHT BETWEEN PERSEPHONE AND APHRODITE, and this eventually being the cause of his death—Artemis, Ares, Apollon, or perhaps all send a boar to gore Adonis and end the affair between him and Aphrodite. However, of course, there is always more to this story: that being the continuation, the romance of Adonis and Dionysus. This will serve as a small introduction to a relatively unknown aspect of Adonis’ mythology, especially in the perspective of Adonis representing infertile life compared to Dionysus’ fertility.
PANYASSIS, AND THEN PLATO
Apollodorus contains one of the earliest tellings of Adonis’ death from the 5th century poet Panyassis, who states that Adonis died twice—once when Persephone obtained him, and another when he was gored by a boar. However, continuing Panyassis’ fragment, Plato Comicus states that Adonis’ death was caused by Aphrodite and Dionysus, not Aphrodite and Persephone:
O Kinyras, king of the hairy-assed Cypriots, Your child is by nature most beautiful and most marvelous Of all humans, but two divinities will destroy him, She being rowed by secret oars, and he rowing them. (fr. 3)
By desiring and loving Adonis, Aphrodite and Dionysus later cause his demise. This is one of the earliest mentions of Adonis and Dionysus, whilst grim, does lead us slightly into the romance of Adonis and Dionysus. Another myth—or perhaps a continuation of this one—presents another tale, as recorded by Plutarch.
PLUTARCH’S FRAGMENT
Plutarch presents a differing story: that Dionysus fought with Aphrodite for Adonis and won. In discussing the ethics of food, particularly eating swine, he invokes this in a lost text written by Phanocles:
Εἰδὼς θεῖον Ἄδωνιν ὀρειφοίτης Διόνυσος ἥρπασεν, ἠγαθέην Κύπρον ἐποιχόμενος. Knowingly, mountain-roaming Dionysus carried away the divine Adonis, after approaching the Holy Cyprian with hostile purpose. Plutarch, Quaestiones Convivales
One of the many reasons he cites for pigs being less than ideal animals for consumption is that they gored Adonis—which, in hypothesis, could be a reason that some Aphrodisian cults avoided consuming pork, but this is merely my own thinking.
This fragment gives little context to the motives of Dionysus in this myth, the reaction of Aphrodite or Adonis. Despite this, the wording is of intrigue to me of several parts:
What does knowingly mean? The translation phrases it as Dionysus knowing, but knowing what? Or does this refer to Adonis knowing that he would be carried off—as in the original ancient Greek, it is placed as “knowing, divine Adonis.”
Adonis here is called a god, theos, which may refer to his apotheosis, which was of contention in ancient Greece.
“Hostile purpose”, ἐποιχόμενος, also refers to the passing of wine. So, instead of violence, he may have given Aphrodite wine in “exchange” for Adonis.
There is also something to be said of the similarity between Adonis being carried off with Dionysus carrying Ariadne away from Noxus. There were also contentions about the divinity of Ariadne, with some myths declaring her dying and another conflating her with Aphrodite—similarly to Adonis, who Plutarch mentioned previously could be identified with Dionysus.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
As remarked in the Adonia in Context, Adonis’ divinity was a contested question—with some remarking him as nothing sacred, while others entreating him as a deity. I personally have come to understand him as divine, returning from the underworld, especially as he journeyed there with Persephone. That within itself—returning to and from the underworld—is no task for mortals, even if it was divinely sanctioned by Zeus. If he did die when he was first received by Persephone, does this imply a cycle of resurrection that eventually led to a state in between, or an odd sense of immortality?
There is also the notable comparison of Adonis and Dionysus mirroring Ariadne and Dionysus, in which they are taken by Dionysus and become his lovers. In my own practice, this does come into Adonis being in our modern terms in a polycule with the god. Fascinatingly, Ariadne’s own divinity was of debate, perhaps remarking her as a parallel to Adonis himself. There is certainly something to be said of Adonis being a sterile god with the fertility god Dionysus, continuing the paradox of Dionysus. Adonis represents the ancient Greek man that was infertile and as such did not mature into a proper member of the polis, and Dionysus is the great disrupter of the polis.
As a personal practice though, there is always the option for others to honour them as I do—as divine lovers—and in my personal practice, Dionysus is the one who eventually “wins” Adonis. And as someone extremely unconventional and a “failed” man in the eyes of my biological family, Adonis is the perfect comfort as the failed adult who succeeds into immortality.

A Mute Pack of Hounds for a Dirty Hunt is one of my favorite books in the novel because it lays what you've pointed out here very clearly and deliciously. Firstly, the idea of Javert even suspecting that Valjean is alive is another destruction: The Moniteur (where it was announced) is a government newspaper-- Valjean's death was official, and thus Javert deludes himself into being comforted-- into believing himself once again invulnerable to that "garbage" Valjean, happy to go about his life and forget about that whole saga!... But he can't let it go. Naturally. And as soon as Javert knows for a fact that the "Beggar who Gives Alms" is a very-much-alive Valjean, he goes into hunting mode, but there's a difference! That moment where he's filled with possession over Valjean being his prey alone that he doesn't tell anyone with the police who he's going after, something that he was rather eager to do before (with his denunciation letter and hunt for the disgraced mayor, I mean!), it stops being about bringing a simple criminal to justice, really, it's about his own satisfaction. When he finally has Valjean cornered in that chapter, he falls into erotically imagining Valjean helpless before him (a rather lurid distraction for a supposedly repressed and chaste man to have!!), and that gives Valjean the opportunity to escape, barrelling Javert into months of "Frustration". In the words of Derailed, "What had he come to? He looked for himself, but could not find himself." [...] "Jean Valjean threw him. All the axioms that had propped up his whole life collapsed before that man." I could go on, but I shall cut myself off here! He's just such a delightful character, and his "corruption" is peppered all over the book, again and again, and i Love it so much.
@wanderinghedgehog, I'm so sorry, I wanted to put this under this post of yours, but tumblr keeps eating it. Hey!! You are right!! I really loved your analysis, and I really hope it's not too unwelcome of me to expand on this myself, as it's something I quietly think about almost every day during my meditations on Javert's character, and don't have a lot of occasion to speak about! I feel as though the best, most overlooked part of Javert's character is this exact thing; His fall is set up in his introductory chapter. Javert is born to a wolf-- He domesticates himself using society and virtue as his sword, wielding it against the parts of himself that he hates-- Only to revert back into a wild, snarling animal when faced with Valjean. His own personal sense of duty and professional boundaries are ALWAYS being blasted specifically by the presence of Jean Valjean (no matter if that presence is real or imagined). It's not just in Javert Derailed, either!
In The Descent, it is present in the fact that he went against Madeleine's orders, which were to immediately free Fantine without punishing her. before those orders, he is a mere hunting dog, truly! He's not the one doing the killing of Fantine, that's the job of a prison. He's merely the one facilitating her death. As we see in the beginning of the scene, Javert is cold and unfeeling in the carrying out of his duty, but he experiences "the most violent emotions he had ever felt in his life" as soon as Madeleine enters the room and speaks on her behalf. Hugo points out that Javert going against a superior was here before an unthinkable action, but his extreme emotions about "What the mayor could be" in that moment blasted that wall away. Madeleine easily destroys something that was once an ingrained part of Javert-- Javert himself says it is the first time in his life that he would do such a thing, and that he was despairing to do it. Later, furious at being humiliated by the man he knows to be Valjean, he writes his letter of denunciation. In Javert, the book named after him (which I also think is significant, considering the books named after characters seem to be highlighting a character's most painful moment, moments at the cost of themselves, ala Eponine), he admits to Madeleine that he had denounced him as a convict out of what he himself initially thinks is a valid complaint, but is then (mistakenly) lead to believe that his fury was just out of personal beef towards a man that apparently had nothing to do with any of this besides Madeleine looking like him, simply resembling Valjean, and that he was not only willing, but demanding needily to destroy his own societal standing, his own career, his own life to make himself virtuous again, able to live with himself again. This is something that I go over so many times-- The Javert chapter is basically just a beta version of Derailed-- That off-screen "Earthquake" Javert goes through must have been so very similar to what he felt in Derailed. He is being forced to face his own abhorrent "mistakes", going against what he had been trained-- and for what? Valjean. The mere bothersome memory of Valjean had eaten away at his "virtue", and so, in a word, Javert must be erased to become "himself" again. In Aftershock, Javert is literally turned into a horrible demon because of his emotions towards Valjean. No longer the stoical and calm man that he was set up as, he turns into a sloppily-dressed animal, slurring his speech, barking out words, grinning and laughing like a madman, so filled with self-satisfaction over being right about Valjean and moreover catching Valjean that Fantine dies of fright. [Continued in a reblog, tumblr is cutting me off bc its too long lol]
#fc consternation tag#i hate this fuckin non functioning site fr#i might be moving any and all analysis to a wordpress soon

The Love of Our Guardian Angel
A beautiful teaching from Fr. George Calciu about the deep love of our Guardian Angel. It will move you to love for your angel and obedience for his sake.
Written by Father George Calciu When God created the celestial hosts — seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, archangels, and angels — He established that the angels must be in an uninterrupted relationship with mankind. Among those angels, the guardian angels are the most kind and loving because they begin their mission in the world by taking care of children. They are…

Thought for the Day – 31 May – What Humility is Not!
Thought for the Day – 31 May – Meditations with Fr Richard Frederick Clarke SJ (1839-1900) HUMILITYMeditations for a Month Chapter FiveWhat Humility is Not! We are inclined, sometimes, to aim at a false humility and so to be hindered in our attainment of true humility. We must be on our guard against errors in this regard. #OTD in 1981 – Day 13 | Bobby Sands recorded his diary for the first seventeen days of his hunger strike in which he detailed his thoughts and feelings on the momentous task that lay ahead of him.
I’m not superstitious, and it was an uneventful day today. I feel all right, and my weight is 58.5 kgs. I was not so tired today, but my back gets sore now and again sitting in the bed. I didn’t get the Irish News, which makes me think there is probably something in it that they don’t wish me to see, but who cares. Fr Murphy was in tonight for a few minutes.
